Puppy Training
How We Raise Our Puppies
We take great care to see that our puppies get off to a good start.
Our momma’s birth their puppies in our nursery with heat pads in a whelping pen in a quiet environment in our home. For the next 5-6 weeks they will stay with mom; nursing, playing, and socializing with their siblings.
Puppies start weaning around 4-5 week. We practice natural weaning. Mom lets us know when she is done. We believe more time with mom and litter mates make a confident well adjusted puppy.
We also start neurological stimulation early the first week to get our babies off to a great start in the world.
What Is Puppy Neurological Stimulation?
Early Neurological Stimulation was first developed by the US Military to improve the performance of future military dogs.
It introduces puppies to mild forms of stimulations and stressors early from birth. These stimulations can kick start their neurological system and improve their natural abilities.
In fact, some studies suggest that only 35% of a puppy’s performance is up to their genetics and up to 65% is determined by their environment. For this reason, it’s crucial that a puppy gets enough body handling, socialization, training, a good diet, and a safe living environment from birth.
Feeding time
By 4-5 weeks, puppies are being weaned naturally by mom. They will be nursing less and less so we begin supplement soft food at this time to encourage eating.
Puppies are usually completely weaned by 6-7 weeks. We feed our puppies high quality puppy food softened twice a day.
Whether you choose, fresh, grain free, or something in between; high quality food is important in over all health of your puppy.
Puppy playpen : Puppies moved to living area
By 5-6 weeks, puppies will be moved to the living room, where more sights, sounds, socialization and handling continue.
We set up a small round pen with sleep, play, and potty areas. Puppies get use to going in and out of their crates. We use potty pads at this young age, as they are not protected from germs to go outside until they have had a few vaccinations.
We offer plenty of play toys and climbing surfaces to give lots of learning and stimulation to puppies.
Puppies are on our wake and sleep schedule; they go to sleep when we do and wake when we get up in the morning. This makes transitioning to sleeping all night in their new families a breeze. (At least that’s the plan )
This training is a good start to life. However, it still is important for families to continue with training and socializations at home. Taking your puppy to safe parks, pet stores, and puppy training classes will help puppy further develop into a well adjusted pet. I do recommend Baxter and Bella online training videos if you do not have training in your area.
Outside play: Puppies exposed to outside sights and sounds as they develop and grow.
